How would you describe your role?
I manage the Network Operations Center (NOC), leading a team responsible for the 24/7 availability and performance of Veilant’s network and critical systems, both internally and for our customers. We proactively monitor infrastructure, respond rapidly to incidents, and serve as the primary escalation point for complex issues. I coordinate incident response across teams, ensure clear communication of impact and status to leadership, and drive efforts to minimize downtime. In my role, I oversee team workload, prioritize operational initiatives, and continuously improve monitoring, response processes, and overall system reliability.
What is your team like?
It’s difficult to describe my team as a whole because each person brings a unique set of strengths and perspectives. That said, there are a few qualities we all share: we’re highly supportive, flexible, and dynamic. Our team operates 24/7/365 so we rely on one another to maintain coverage, especially when PTO comes up. Everyone is willing to step in outside of their normal hours to ensure continuity, which speaks to the team’s strong sense of ownership and support.
The team is also very dynamic in how we work. We regularly collaborate with other teams such as Systems Engineering, Software, and PMO. Priorities can shift quickly, and we adapt by coordinating closely, handing off work seamlessly, and often balancing individual projects alongside shared assignments.
What part of Veilant’s mission do you connect with?
I connect with our mission to cultivate an environment for our customers where they can focus more on their day to day operations while we help them navigate the ever-evolving digital landscape. We provide the tools and training so they can make more educated decisions in real-time.
How have you grown professionally at Veilant?
I’ve experienced significant growth in both my technical and interpersonal skills during my time at Veilant. I began as an individual contributor on the same team I now manage, which has given me valuable perspective as a leader. Along the way, I’ve developed more effective communication strategies, tailoring feedback to how each team member responds best and encouraging growth based on their individual motivators. My technical knowledge has also expanded considerably, particularly in Linux and networking. I’ve learned a great deal from my managers and colleagues. I actively fold in the qualities I admire in them with my own approach. I truly learn something new every day.
What resources have you taken advantage of at Veilant?
There are two that I’ve mainly taken advantage of: the flexible PTO policy and the organized group activities. I’ve attended a couple Capitals games, a DC United game, and other company culture events that I think are really fun. It’s nice to be given the space to connect with people I don’t usually work with and get to know them in a casual environment.
What makes Veilant unique?
I think what makes Veilant unique is a combination of three things. Veilant is an exceptional company for career growth. I’ve witnessed firsthand, many instances of people starting in one position and progressing multiple rungs up the ladder. Veilant really helps facilitate this passage. My first boss here started in Advisory Operations, moved to the NOC, then NOC manager, where I met him. Currently he’s on the Systems Engineering team. Veilanters want to see each other succeed. Senior colleagues are genuinely excited about mentoring and teaching. Reaching out to them can seem intimidating at first, but seeing their excitement to assist will immediately put you at ease.
Secondly, Veilant has a really high population of veteran and military personnel. We are offered 10 days of paid military leave annually. This benefit is just a sample of the support leadership gives serving Veilanters.
The third quality is that we are a cutting-edge software company. Working in a technical IT role at a company like Veilant means being part of real innovation, not just maintaining legacy systems. We have the opportunity to experiment with AI tools, new architectures, and cloud technologies. With such a large proportion of the organization made up of IT professionals, there is no shortage of role models. We are surrounded by subject matter experts across a wide range of specialties, creating constant opportunities to learn and grow.
